Parietal regulations should be ex­ amined by the Judicial Council rather than the Student Senate according to Bob Gleason, Judicial Council Coordinator. Follow ing Student Body President Briar Callaghan’s statement at a Stu­ dent Senate m eeting that the un iver­ s ity ’s present po licy o f expulsion for parietal vio lations is too strict, Gleason created a com m ittee to study the matter. At last n ight’s council meeting, Gleason explained the counc il’s decision to assume ju risd ic tion and address the "h o t ” issue o f parietals. Gleason said, “ Brian’s position is that the present punishment is too dras­ tic. Callaghan suggested the stu­ dents involved be moved o ff campus instead o f expelled. I to ld h im that i f anyone is going to look in to parietals I th ink i t ’s the Judicia l Council. I said w e’ll handle it. We’ll study the issue, “ We’re on ly going to examine the present policy, not necessarily at­ tem pt to change it,” Gleason added. “ Brian Callaghan doesn’t te ll us what to do. I f this com m ittee decides there’s a better alternative, then we’ll pursue it. 1 agree, though, w ith Brian that parietal regulations have to be looked at." Gleason said the com m ittee w ill proceed w ith caution because “ we m ight be opening a can o f worms. This whole th ing m ight backfire. We might end up getting more students kicked out o f school. ” Some rectors, Gleason indicated, don’t report all parietal violations. He said last year on ly a small number o f these violations resulted in expu l­ sion. “ I f we raise the issue, the rec­ tors m ight be less w illin g to use the ir own d iscre tion ," Gleason said. The creation o f the Special Com­ m ittee on Parietals is viewed by Gleason as the latest step in restor­ ing c red ib ility to the Judicial Coun­ cil. “ I th ink the fact that we’re handling the parietal issue is a boost to the council’s c red ib ility . Last year we w ou ld not have been able to handle such an issue because we lacked the organization. ”
